This is the first year we’re offering a Kenya as part of our curated lineup of coffees in the Downeast Reserve line. This Kenya Nguvu AA impressed us so much that we wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience the same joy we did.

This coffee hails from the Murang’a district, located in Kenya’s Central Province and is made of up SL28 and Riru11 varietals. The SL28 varietal is known for its exceptional cup quality and is one of the most highly regarded varieties in Kenya. These two varietals, along with the region’s loamy topsoil and high elevations, all contribute to this coffee’s complexity and fruit forward flavor.

Why we’re excited: The fruit bomb aroma once ground instantly grabbed the room’s attention. Things got even more interesting when we brewed it up. The ensuing debate over which flavors each of us experienced started up a conversation that made us realize the complexity in the cup—notes of mango, grilled grapefruit, ripe grapes, marmalade, and crème brulee were common descriptors. While there were a variety of flavor notes experienced, we all agreed that this coffee had an extremely juicy mouthfeel and a delicate wine like acidity.

How we enjoy this coffee: 12-cup batch brew using 100g (3.53oz) of coffee ground at a medium coarseness, and 1,815ml (64oz) of filtered water. Target brew time was 4 minutes.
